About this artifact

This unfinished cross-stitched (leviathan stitch) carpet made of wool yarn was worked by Myra Heyer, Capt. Andrew Heyer's wife, on board the bark Wanderer. She died in childbirth on St. Helena in 1881 before finishing the work. Capt. Heyer left the ship to care for his daughter. They returned from St. Helena when the daughter was eight months old.
