About this artifact

In the mid-19th century, shoulder guns with explosive charges shooting the harpoons were patented. Over time they took the place of hand thrown harpoons to catch the whales. They were much safer, for they could be shot at a whale from a greater distance than one that was hand thrown. This is a Brand gun, distinctive with its iron skeleton stock.
