About this artifact

This is a souvenir ostrich egg brought back from the Pacific by Caroline Mayhew, wife of Captain William Mayhew on the ship Warren out of New Bedford. The shell has been carved with a scene including men and pyramids. The Ostrich is a flightless bird, native to Africa.
