About this artifact

Pipe smoking was a luxury while aboard a whaleship, and the tobacco was often a reward for hard work. This pipe features carved animals resting along the rim while fish and birds frolic along the stem. It was a souvenir item brought back from a voyage to the north, most likely Alaska.
