About this artifact

In November, 1867 the ship Roman was getting ready to head back to New Bedford from Honolulu. This was the Roman's voyage prior to Jared Jernegan's voyage as its Master. With space in its hold, it took on oil from the Ship St. George to transport back to its home port. This handwritten receipt states that it received on board the St George's oil. It is signed by the 1st Mate.
