School Slate and Slate Pencil

About this artifact

This writing board was made from slate set in a wooden frame. A slate pencil was used to make the mark, and then the slates could be wiped clean and used over again. The process of cleaning the slate is where the phrase 'to wipe the slate clean' comes from, which means to make a new start.
