About this artifact

This is the cover to a catalog put out by Wm. G. Wing & Co., Ship Chandlery in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Ship chandleries and outfitters sometimes published catalogs of items they hoped to sell. Ships embarking on whaling voyages in the 19th century expected to be gone for several years and at sea for weeks and months at a time. They needed to take with them food, supplies, tools and replacements for just about everything for the ship, such as sails, rigging, spars etc.
