About this artifact

Portrait of the Captains of the "Stone Fleet". The Stone Fleet was made up of aging ships purchased in New Bedford and other ports for use of the Union Army during the American Civil War. The ships, loaded with stones, were sailed to South Carolina to be sunk at the entrance of the Charleston Harbor as a blockade for Confederate runners.
