Families on Board

Unlike Jared Jernegan's family who stayed in Honolulu, some families remained on board for the trip north. One of them was the Thomas Willams family on the Monticello out of New London, Connecticut. Captain Williams and his wife Eliza Azelia had three children, Stancel, William Fish and Mary, all born aboard the Florida. Captained by their father for eight years, the Florida was also among the Arctic fleet of 1871.

Another whaling family, Leander and Jane Owen with their young son William were in the Arctic on the Contest. Captain Owen was from Martha's Vineyard and had taken command of the Contest in 1870. Captain Owen navigated many whaling cruises through Arctic waters.
