It is likely there were few interactions between family and crew. Later in life however, Helen reminisced fondly about the cabin boy: "Prescott was happy all day in playing with ropes, and he also had a swing. The small cabin boy used to amuse him."

As the month of December came to a close, the Roman was headed south towards Cape Horn at the tip of South America. It's interesting to note that Laura didn't mention in her journal how she, Prescott, Helen and Jared and the crew of the Roman observed the holiday season, or if they even did!
