Laura's journal entry on March 1, 1871, was her last. Although she, her brother and mother did not witness the mutiny, it was the most disturbing episode on their journey. It was not something that eight year old Laura chose to write about in her journal.
The next phase of the family's journey began as the Roman headed north again to the Arctic and Mrs. Jernegan and her children headed east on a steamship to California. The story that followed was based upon personal memoirs and newspaper accounts since Laura wrote no more entries in her journal.
