New Bedford Whaling Museum

Amos Haskins was a Wampanoag Indian of the Gay Head Tribe who rose through the whaling industry to become a master mariner. He was born in 1816 and died at sea in 1861. It is believed that he is one of the few American Indians to have achieved that rank.
