Martha's Vineyard Museum

"The Friend" was a monthly newspaper for seamen published in Honolulu, Oahu, in the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) from 1843-1954. Founded and edited by C.S. Damon, a missionary and seamen's chaplain, the newpaper was originally called "The Friend of Temperance and Seamen." It included news from American and English newspapers, announcements of upcoming events, reprints of sermons, poetry, local news, editorials, ship arrivals and departures and a listing of marriages and deaths. Damon was editor of the newspaper from 1843-1884.
