Rebecca was born to Asa and Sophia Clarke in Norridgewock, Maine on Feb. 22,1833. She was educated at the Female Academy while being tutored at home in Greek and Latin. Her role as a writer began with a diary that she kept from age 9 to 11. She taught school in Indiana for 10 years before returning to Maine because of her severe hearing loss. She penned the name "Sophie May" in 1861 as her first story was published. Often called "the Dickens of the Nursery", she published 45 books, most of them for children.
