A tattoo is a marking made by inserting ink into the layers of skin to change the pigment for decorative or other reasons. The word comes from the Polynesian (Tahitian, Samoan, Tongan, etc.) word tatau. This sketch of a Maori man from New Zealand was created by Sydney Parkinson, the artist on Captain Cook's 1st voyage to New Zealand in 1769.
