Nantucket Historical Association

Three shopkeepers inside a shop on Nantucket. The Bric-A-Brack shop offered general household gods. In the early and middle of the 19th century, there were many women merchants in whaling communities such as Nantucket. Husbands were away for years at a time and the dangers of whaling left many women widows.
